La Vescogna

History

Villa La Vescogna, formerly known as Villa Calchi Marliani, Ghislanzoni, Fossati Bellani, is a 17th-century historic residence that preserves the charm of ancient noble country homes. It stands on a panoramic hilltop in the upper village of Calco, nestled in a landscape that combines the timeless elegance of Brianza with the beauty of the nearby Lake Como.

The origin of the name “Vescogna” is shrouded in mystery: some historians attribute it to Spanish influence, while older sources mention “Vascogna,” suggesting a connection to the French region of Gascony. Beyond its enigmatic name, the villa boasts a fascinating history. Its roots delve into the Middle Ages when, in the 13th century, it was a castle belonging to the noble Calchi family. Its strategic position, along the border between the Duchy of Milan and the Republic of Venice, made it an important defensive stronghold.

Over time, the castle underwent transformations that turned it into an elegant Baroque villa, while retaining some distinctive features of its medieval origin. This blend of fortified architecture and residential refinement makes La Vescogna a unique place where the past comes alive in every detail.

Spaces

Externally, La Vescogna presents itself with sober and imposing forms, reminiscent of its ancient defensive function. The floor plan follows an asymmetrical H-shape, with wings of different sizes developing around an entrance courtyard. This space immediately reveals one of the villa’s most fascinating characteristics: the perfect fusion between the austerity of medieval architecture and the lightness typical of Baroque noble villas.

Beyond the entrance, the villa opens southward with a refined Italian-style garden, arranged on three terraced levels. Scenic ramps, stone staircases, and balconies create an elegant architectural choreography, enhanced by the presence of boxwood hedges finely shaped according to the art of topiary. This orderly symmetry is balanced by the presence of the Romantic Grove, a green area added in the 19th century that develops on the lateral slope of the hill, offering a wilder and more poetic corner.

A Timeless Place

In a more secluded and sunny position lies the historic lemon house, overlooking the swimming pool built in the mid-20th century. Surrounded by lush hydrangea hedges, this area represents a corner of peace and refinement, perfect for moments of relaxation or exclusive events.

Every space of La Vescogna tells a fragment of its history and the elegance of “villa living,” a tradition that made Brianza a reference point for Lombard nobility between the 18th and 19th centuries. Even today, walking through its halls and gardens, one can perceive the atmosphere of an era when human art and natural beauty merged in perfect harmony.

La Vescogna is not just a historic residence but a place capable of transporting its guests to a distant era, amidst elegance, culture, and timeless landscapes. Here, among its refined spaces and the surrounding greenery, the charm of the past continues to live, offering a unique and authentic experience.
